Archiving sensitive imaging data is far more than just saving medical images on a hard drive array. Data maintenance in the digital age is just as much a mark of quality in radiology as managing order entries, scheduling appointments, or maintaining service documentation.
In hectic day-to-day routines, one wrong push of a button can assign images to the wrong patient name. In the analog world, the MTRA could grab a marker, but in today’s digital world, the PACS user interface is necessary for a simple correction. A rigid system that doesn’t allow for mistakes is no longer up to date.
To make day-to-day administrative tasks as simple as using a marker, Digital Medics uses a pervasive Web interface for the VivoSafe Archive called VivoSafeWeb.
Fix incorrect image assignments, mark poor images, correct image descriptions – all of these tasks can be done with any Internet-ready PC, so that you’re able to set your daily routine the way you want rather than being fenced in by technology.
The standardized exchange of patient data between care providers is a topic of major interest in integrated care. However, there is still a long road ahead. Even so, the seamless availability of relevant imaging data is a must for diagnosis.
To that end, Digital Medics offers special reader stations: the VivoSafe Import Gateways. These small devices are equipped with a DVD drive, and can be placed at central locations while being managed using a web browser on an available PC.
That means no additional keyboards or mice, and no extra user interface, since the Import Gateway is controlled using the simple VivoSafeWeb browser-based access.
After importing, simply reconcile the remote images with a dedicated radiology order, and the imported examination is assigned automatically to the appropriate patient as a prior record.
Which strategy is being used in your institute? Scan thin, read thick? Temporarily archive thin, read thin and store thick for follow-ups, in case the thin ones were deleted? Do you know the question, “is the thin-sliced dataset still on the modality workstation”?
Even today, it is still firmly fixed in users’ minds that a dataset with 500-2000 layers is “too big” for an archive, and that the archive would “burst at the seams” if they were stored. When you see the actual size of that dataset (half of a DVD), you can’t help but think that even your home entertainment storage could do this job.
Thanks to the high-performance VivoSafe PACS, storing high-resolution data is not only possible, but in combination with VivoLab Workstation editing tools, it’s compelling. Simplifying acquisition protocols without additional reformatting or visualization streamlines the MTRA’s workflow. And the radiologist can flexibly choose between orthogonal and oblique layering when he needs to.
